Getting to know Almaty

I have spent today getting to know Almaty which was once a major trading spot on the Silk route. Now it is a modern city with tree lined streets and a mix of new shopping areas and older markets.

In the central park there is a huge ornate Russian Orthodox church, the tsarist - era Zenkov Cathedral. Today there were hundreds people there to celebrate what looked like the ordaining of several priests.
