Sesriem

19 MAY 2023

We started the day enjoying a fabulous continental style breakfast, our last opportunity together before Nahida and Pete joined other tours.

We eventually set off once John had managed to get some electrical repair work done to the trailer lights. Our route took us south to Walvis Bay, the second largest town in Namibia. The town is a major port and a favourite holiday destination for Namibian and S African tourists. The scenery was already transforming into desert landscapes again with incredible rock formations. We saw the occasional ostriches and the entrances to distant lodges and farms. We stopped on a ridge to get a sense of the space, tranquillity and antiquity.

On route, we passed through a gorge where seemly two German geologists decided to hide out during the war to avoid military service. They eventually gave themselves up in Windhoek as one needed medical aid. They were invited to become key geologists in Namibia as a result of their recordings and efforts.

In the changing colours of the afternoon, we set up camp in the Sesriem camp site by the National Park gate
