We Are Able

The employees of the Neema Craft Workshop have unique personal stories to tell of how being differently-abled led them to Iringa, Tanzania.

Here their deafness and physical disabilities are embraced without stigma. It is their willingness to learn new skills and be part of a thriving business, that counts.

The workforce of one hundred and twenty adults, train to become skilled artisans specialising in carpentry, sewing, weaving, screen printing, papermaking, cooking or housekeeping. They occupy an extensive workshop space and produce high quality wooden furniture, furnishing and small gift items for local and international markets.

For me, this centre demonstrates what is possible when we enable ever person to achieve their very best and be who they are meant to be; naturally creative, resourceful and whole. I witnessed the sheer scale of talent, creativity and determination that has been unleased amongst this community by giving each individual the opportunity to show their true abilities. Their example is changing perspectives and fostering inclusion.
