N’dende
29 APRIL 2023
I waited for a long time at the motor park on the outskirts of Lambarene for a car to fill up and set off towards Mouilla heading south east towards the Republic of Congo border.
The early morning travellers were takin breakfast here; spaghetti, baguettes filled with beans and small freshly fried donuts.
Our journey took us through the forest lands of the Mbombe and Mitsogo people. Living primarily from the forests and rivers, these people are hardy and smaller in stature. Their culture reflects the importance of life on the regions rivers and lakes - the coat of arms and statues in the villages often are of a sirene (mermaid).
On our journey, we stopped at a small spring by the roadside. The passengers all got out to drink the water and spread it over their hands and faces. They said it was sacred and would bring good luck.
The scenery along the way was wonderful, mountainous and green. Fresh air filled the car, the temperature was beautifully refreshing.
I reached N'dende travelling with a group of three women who worked for the security police in the town. They introduced me to the driver of the 4x4 who would be able to take me to the border tomorrow, showed me where the immigration office was and accompanied me to the Hotel Divive. This support and guidance is normal when I travel. Everyone is always so helpful and welcoming.
At the hotel, I checked into a simple room for 9000CFA per night; occupying buildings within the police compound. Here I met four Belgium motor bikers on route to Congo like me. They obviously were on route to another hotel due to lack of rooms, so I didn't have much chance to talk with them - shame... I haven't seen other travellers for days / weeks.
