13 MAY 2023

It was so exciting to be off on a trip into the countryside of Namibia. What an amazing opportunity.

Andrew, Karen and I were picked up by our guide, Gregory and our driver, John at the Backpackers and taken to the immaculate offices of Chameleon Safaris to meet Pete and Nahida. I never fail to marvel at how a random group of people can come together and just make the most perfect team. We called ourselves team SPANK and soon got to see that John and Greg were the most marvellous tour partners to be with. They calmly and smoothly facilitated each minute of the day with humour, companionship and respect.

We stopped off for supplies at a supermarket. I'm still awe struck by the range of products and quantities. All imported and arranged in sections providing incredible options.

Mount Edjo Lodge Nature Reserve

Our campsite was beside a waterhole. Baboons came and demonstrated their daily interactions; preening, playing, drinking, running, courting..... right in view of our tents.

The reserve provided a jeep and driver for our game drive this afternoon. I could not quite believe the range of animals seen just on this one drive. Ending the day with sightings of black rhinos was just magical. These creatures are huge, majestic and prehistorical in appearance. It was very special to see these animals up so close and in a natural habitat. There were many first sightings for me; the butter trees, many species of birds and herds of springboks. I am loving being in the company of bird and animal enthusiasts. I'm learning a lot from them and definitely benefiting from their keen eyes for spotting.
